You are at the beginning of an often life changing journey and we are right here with you to help you along the way. By owning a menstrual cup you are joining millions of other people who have wanted to make a change, not only for their body but for the environment. A menstrual cup is a body positive menstrual management solution.
Firstly we recommend the you read the instructions that came along with your menstrual cup or download our instruction sheet which applies to all brands of cups. Read it carefully and if you have any questions please email us as we are here to help. You can also refer to our HELP page where lots of questions are answered with practical advice
Something really important to remember is that every person has a different body and so no one technique applies to all. Your body is unique and it can take several periods to get the hang of using your cup as you need to get to know your body and what works best for you. No one rule applies to all.
Practice the different folds by watching the videos or checking out this page on menstrual cup folds. Hold the cup in your hand and get familiar with the way it feels and how it pops open after you fold it. The fold is designed to simulate the end of a tampon and once inside your vagina it pops open – this is the technique you need to master.
Before you use your menstrual cup for the first time please wash your hands with warm soapy water and sterilize your cup before insertion.
Once you have sterilized your cup and absorbed all of the information on how to use and fold your menstrual cup it is time to give it a go! We suggest to find a comfortable position, standing with one leg up on a chair is helpful to begin with. Another great place to start is in the shower as you can easily try as many times as you like until you feel that you get it right, the warm water is relaxing and also helps with insertion.
Fold your menstrual cup in the fold you have chosen, or try several folds to see which one your prefer when you insert into your vagina. Insert your cup in past the entrance muscles of your vagina. Once you get the rim past this point give the cup a little “twist and push”, releasing your fold as you twist it, allowing the cup to open. The cup should sit just inside your vagina, not as high as a tampon. The stem should be sitting just inside the stronger muscles at the entrance to your vagina. Run your finger around the base of the cup to check that it has popped open correctly. If not, try again until it feels in place. You should be able to run your finger around the base of the cup to see if it has opened correctly, it will feel smooth and even as you run your finger around the stem. If you run your finger around the stem and the base feels pushed in on one side or flattened you may need to try again. If you cup has opened it will form a seal inside your vagina and will not leak.
If your cup has not been inserted correctly it can leak. Some people find they have no trouble whatsoever with their cup opening and sealing but others it can take a while to master the technique. Don’t give up in this situation, you will get it right and master it!
If you are worried about your cup leaking use a pad for the first few days until you get your cup in the most comfortable position for you, opening fully and forming a seal.
The flow of your period will determine how many times you will empty you cup during the day. Heavier periods may require your cup to be emptied more often, every 2-4 hours. Regular and Lighter periods will sometimes mean that you can leave your menstrual cup in for up to 8 hours (but no longer), which means you can almost forget about your period during the day and get on with your life!
Some people find that their periods are shorter and they have less cramping with their menstrual cup. Along with not having to empty your cup for up to 8 hours a menstrual cup can be literally life changing.
