Recently I have been doing a lot of spiritual and holistic learning through an amazing podcast called Manifest This and my life coach at Awaken Meditation and Mindfulness. I was fascinated to learn recently that historically, women have been very connected to the moon, and our menstrual cycles have been the basis for the organization of the calendar month. Until very recently, my period has always been something I endured but would never think to enjoy. However, the more learning I do, the more I realise what a sacred time it is and how connected we are to the pull of the universe.
It turns out that there are two different types of moon cycles, and whichever one you are in can have a huge effect on your energy levels and personality within that week. There is the red moon cycle, and the white moon cycle.
Red Moon Cycle
If you are currently menstruating during the full moon, you are in your red moon cycle. Your energy is outpouring. You feel creative, energetic, connected to other people around you. In the red moon cycle you seek to develop as a person, learn and teach, talk and interact. I am currently menstruating during the full moon, in my red moon cycle. This explains why during my last period, I wanted to talk, go out, learn to surf, swim and be active. However, during our lives, all women encounter both white and red moon cycles so it is important to understand where you are at right now and feed into that energy.
White Moon Cycle
If you aren’t currently menstruating during the full moon, this means that you are menstruating during the creation of the new moon. This white moon cycle is a time for introversion and self-care. Associated with maternal instinct and motherhood. You may feel the need to stay home, stay in, with little energy to give to others. The thought of trying something new or spending time around people could feel heavy and counterintuitive to what you need right now. There is so much power in knowing which moon cycle you are in. If you are currently experiencing a white moon cycle, be kind to yourself. Don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed to cancel plans and indulge in what you need.
If you are menstruating in the white moon cycle or the red moon cycle, tap into how you are feeling, be true to yourself and don’t be afraid to be selfish, if you are coming from the right place, the people you love will understand. Never restrict yourself whilst menstruating, listen to your body and give it what it needs. Nourish yourself always. If you are currently experiencing trouble with your moon cycle, let nature into your life. Spend time outside, bring plants into your home. There is a lot of research on how light and nature can bring you back to your healthy, regular cycle. I highly recommend Toni Weschler’s book, Taking Charge of your Fertility for more information on regular cycles, natural birth control and tracking your period. Always remember, your body is a harmonious masterpiece in which disorder and order come together to create beauty, in the same way as nature. Never feel pressured to suppress your period for anyone else, this is a time for self-growth and development, something that is sacred to you and only you. Happy Menstruating x
